Complete Guide to Mastering the Fishing Mechanic
Fishing in 99 Nights in the Forest: An Essential Survival Skill
Fishing is one of the most crucial game mechanics in 99 Nights in the Forest, introduced in the major Fishing Update. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about fishing, from basic mechanics to advanced techniques.
Getting Started with Fishing
To begin your fishing journey, you'll need to obtain the Old Rod first. This essential tool can be acquired from either the Pelt Trader or found in the Fishing Cabin, a common structure scattered throughout the Forest.
Players who choose the Fisherman Class have the advantage of starting with an old rod, giving them immediate access to this valuable survival skill.
Complete Fishing Mechanics Guide
Where and How to Fish
You can fish in any pond at any time by simply clicking on the pond with your fishing rod equipped and waiting for a bite. Look for ponds with white, transparent ripples - these indicate "fast" fishing spots that result in quicker bites.
- Fast fishing spots disappear after about 6 catches
- Regular ponds take up to 15 seconds for a bite
- Algal, bone, and cold ponds typically lack fast fishing spots
The Fishing Mini-Game
Once you get a bite, the fishing mini-game begins. Success requires precise timing and skill:
- Click LMB or LT when the red bar is over the green rectangle
- Correct timing fills the progress bar
- Wrong timing causes progress loss
- Rarer fish have more difficult mini-games
Rod Progression System
Old Rod
Starting rod with basic fishing capabilities
Good Rod
Improved performance and better catch rates
Strong Rod
Best rod for catching rare and difficult fish
Rods gain XP through successful fishing. More difficult catches provide more XP. Once the XP bar is full, visit the Skills Building with your rod to upgrade it at the rod crafting table.

- The Jellyfish is unique - it can be eaten raw and provides a speed boost without damaging the player

Advanced Fishing Tips and Secrets
Secret Commands
Did you know there's a hidden fishing secret? If you type "yay fishing" in the chat while having any rod in hand and during the fishing minigame, 2-3 Diamonds will fall from the sky!
Note: This only works once per player.
Equipment Management
You can drop your current fishing rod (as long as it's not a level 1 Old Rod) and take a new one. This allows for strategic equipment sharing in multiplayer games.
Always carry multiple rods for extended fishing expeditions.
